By law, Bourbon and Rye whiskeys have to mature in new oak barrels. This expression of Michter's distillery is matured in bourbon soaked barrels and therefore it is called "Michter's American Whiskey". No grain neutral spirits are used, so this is an "unblended" bottling.

John and Michael Schenk were the first to distill rye whiskey in the area during 1753. The distillery stayed in the family’s hands until 1860 when Abraham Bomberger purchased the facilities. The distillery would be known as “Bomberger’s Distillery” during his time.

Like so many distilleries in the U.S., the distillery had to close in 1919 due to Prohibition. After several changes in ownership status, Louis Forman would be the new owner and during 1950 he came up with the “Michter’s” brand by combining the names of his two sons, Michael and Peter.

In 1989 the distillery would close once again due to bankruptcy. Joseph Magliocco and Richard Newman worked together to revive the Michter’s brand and with two operating distilleries in Fort Nelson and Shinely and the use of Michter’s Springfield Farm, the brand is resurrected and offers a range of whiskeys.
