The identity of the founder is not clear as both Magnus Eunson, a priest who illegally distilled whisky and David Robertson are considered candidates.

In 1826 it was Robert Borwick who got the first legal license for the distillery. In 1895 James Grant would be the new owner and during his time, the distillery was expanded twice.

Highland Distillers would name themselves the new owners in 1937 and in 1999 Edrington came in charge until today.

One of the unique features in Highland Park distillery is the use of aromatic peat from Hobbister Moor as the peat from Orkney island gives a different flavor background to whisky compared with Islay or Highlands peat.

Another feature is the use of sherry seasoned oak casks for full maturation and just for a “sherry finish”

The capacity of the distillery is approximately 2.8 million liters per year.
