Ben Nevis Distillery
Ben Nevis Distillery is named for the mountain that rises above it in the western Highlands. It gets its alpine water from two pools high on the mountainside – Coire Leis and Coire na’Ciste – that drain into a stream called Allt a’Mhuilinn.
The distillery was founded by “Long John” McDonald in 1825. In 1856, after “Long John” passed away, his son Donald received the ownership and in 1878 a second distillery was founded nearby.
The two different distilleries had finally merged into one
At some point in 1955 the distillery was acquired by Joseph Hobbs and operated a Coffey still as well. With a new approach it was the only distillery in Scotland to “marry” grain and malt before maturation for their blended whiskies.
In 1989 Nikka would be the new owners of the distillery, and although everyone expected modern-style techniques in whisky making, the distillery continues to produce an Old-school style whisky.
