James Stuart was the man who started building the distillery in 1878, but financial problems forced him to step aside. It was Robert Dick and William Grant who took over and with the help of the local community (through the fundraising actions of Reverend William Sharp) managed to complete the construction.

In 1887 Glenrothes and Bunnahabhain formed the Highland distillers and even though the distillery met success, it also met misfortune. Specifically in 1887 and 1922 fire accidents caused severe damage to the distillery while in 1903 an explosion almost destroyed it.

On every single occasion, the distillery would be repaired and rebuilt, until 1929 where it had to stop production but only for little time.

After 1960 the distillery would increase the number of its stills on several occasions and in 1987 Berry Brothers & Rudd would become the new owners.

They kept the brand of Glenrothes although selling Cutty Sark (the descendant brand of Highland Distillers) only until 2017 where Edrington got the brand name back.

Its ten stills can lead to a capacity of approximately 5,5 million liters per year.
