Keizo Sahi was looking for ways to improve and expand the boundaries of what Japanese whisky would be. To achieve that, he searched all over Japan to find the perfect place for a distillery to be founded.

On the slopes of mountain Kaikomagatake he found the place he was searching, with access to high quality water and a beautiful forest around the site. So 50 years after the first distillery of Suntory (Yamazaki) was built, a second distillery was founded and named after the nearby town of Hakushu. Hakushu, meaning “white sandbar”, is considered to be one of the highest located distilleries in the world.

A second site was built in 1981. Hakushu not only provides whiskies for the needs of Suntory, but offers several distillery bottlings as well.
