Charles Doig was the architect of the distillery and it was considered to be one of the most well designed distilleries of its era.

Soon, Highland Distillers (which became Edrington) became the owners in 1899. The distillery produced whisky mainly for blended whiskies, but in 1927 it was forced to close for a little more than two decades.

In 1949 after the distillery resumed production, an innovation took place regarding the floor maltings with the addition of a Saladin box. Since the needs increased in the future a further 10 Saladin boxes were added in the next 15 years.

Demand would still grow in the next few years and four more stills were added in order to increase production but again in 2010 the distillery was forced to shut down.

Not for long, as Ian MacLeod would be the next owner in 2012 and the distillery once again resumed production. This time for its own bottlings and a new range of Single malts.

All of the almost 4,2 million annual capacity is matured exclusively in Oloroso Sherry Casks.
