Benromach Distillery
Benromach is located near the city of Forres in Morayshire, Speyside. It was founded in 1898 by Duncan McCallum and F.W. Brickman.
A combination of barley shortage, an early temperance movement in northern Europe, and decreased Scotch whisky’s prestige led around 29 whisky distilleries to cease operations between 1895 to 1905 and Benromach was amongst the casualties, as it closed in 1900.
In 1911 Harvey McNair & Co bought the distillery but again production had to stop in 1914 due to World War I.
In 1938 the distillery was bought by the Associated Scottish Distilleries Ltd. and it would resume production from 1963 to 1983.
At the same time, it was modernized but again it had to close in 1983.
In 1993, an independent bottler, Gordon & MacPhail acquired the distillery and are the current owners.
The brand gained and is still gaining reputation and recognition, although it is dedicated to small production with a yearly output of 200,000 liters.
