Thomas MacKenzie founded the distillery in 1838 and as the laird of the establishment decided to lease the distillery.
In 1855, the distillery was sold to Thomas McGregor and Alexander MacLennan who became owners only for 15 years. After Alexander MacLennan passed away, his widow married again with Alexander MacKenzie and became the new owners of the distillery in 1870.
In 1896 the distillery would be sold to James Watson & Co who almost immediately began expanding the distillery before selling it again to Dewar’s in 1923. Finally 2 years later DCL (Diageo) would become the owners until today.
Glen Ord distillery is one of the few cases that produces the malt it is using. The original malting floors were abandoned in 1961 when Saladin boxes were installed but they were removed in 1968.
The 6 stills in place today produce whisky for several of Diageo’s brands, and for its own bottlings as well.
