It is believed that the word Kinchie comes from the “De Quincy”, the original owners of the land around the distillery.
Unfortunately the brothers went bankrupt in 1853, and the distillery was closed and turned into a sawmill.

In 1881 a group of investors led by Major James Grey acquired the distillery. Production resumed and in 1890 the distillery was refurbished and expanded. Initially in 1914 Glenkinchie distillery along several Lowland distilleries formed Scottish Malt Distillers and after several mergers, in 1925 the distillery would be part of DCL which led to Diageo.

In 1998 a single malt expression of the distillery became part of the Classic Malt range.
Although the majority of the approximately 2,5 million liter annual capacity is used in blends, several single malt expressions of Glenkinchie distillery are also available.
