INDIAN WHISKY DISTILLERIES
India is a country surrounded by mystery. And their approach in whisky production is a mystery as well.
There are hundreds of distilleries across the whole India. And many of them are known as whisky distilleries. Well, that’s not the case, since what they call “whisky” is a blending of grain spirits and molasses spirits. And according to World Trade Organization whisky can only contain grain spirit (the spirit that uses molasses as the basic ingredient is rum)
Still, there are distilleries that produce whisky. In fact Amrut distillery in Bangalore already has a great reputation amongst whisky fans. John distilleries and McDowell which are located in Goa create single malt expressions as well.
India’s climate and high temperatures is a challenge regarding the maturation process. While in Scotland 2% of the barrel content is evaporated annually, in India 16% of the barrel content is consumed by angels.
Whisky distilleries in India faced the challenge and in many cases after efforts and experiments they seem to surpass the difficulties and offer great bottlings to contribute with more locations in our journey through whisky.
