The distillery was founded in 1898, by John Thompson and the architecture was done by the famous Charles Doig.

The distillery started production in 1899, but one year later, in 1900, it was forced to close.
In 1904 W&A Gilbey bought the distillery and resumed production.

In 1962 it merged with United Wine Traders and formed IDV.
The following years several merges occurred with IDV becoming part of Grand Metropolitan which finally led to the foundation of Diageo after a final merge with Guiness.

Knockando uses the Cardnach Spring as its water source and it was the first distillery to use electricity in Speyside. A basic ingredient for blends for years (like J&B), its four stills nowadays produce single malt bottlings as well.
