John Johnston is considered to be the founder of the distillery in 1816. A second distillery was operating in the same area as well, before Lagavulin absorbed it in 1837.

John Logan Mackie bought the distillery in 1862 and in 1889 his nephew Peter Mackie is in control of the distillery.

Peter Mackie is known for the creation of White Horse blend back in 1890. After he passed away in 1924 a race of changes in ownership would start until 1997 when Diageo acquired the distillery.

During World War II the distillery was forced to halt production, while in 1951 a fire caused severe damage. In 1974 its malting floors would no longer be used.

Known for its heavily peated flavor profile, in 1988 Lagavulin 16 year old would be selected as part of the six Classic Malts.
