The elements of Islay is a single malt range from different distilleries of the isle of Islay. Each expression is cask strength, without chill-filtration or coloring. The range is inspired by chemistry and medical laboratories. This malt comes from Laphroaig distillery, distilled in 1998 and bottled in 2017, while it matured in ex-Madeira wine casks
The distillery was founded in 1815, by two brothers, Donald and Alexander Johnston.
Donald would become the sole owner as he bought his brother’s share but in 1847 he died in an accident so his uncle John Johnston takes control, until Dougald Johnston (Donald’s son) becomes 21 years old and starts running the distillery along with his cousin Alexander Johnston.
In 1887 after Alexander passed away, his sisters Mrs William Hunter and Katherine Johnston along with his nephew J.Johnston-Hunter would take control.
By 1921 another member of the family, Ian Hunter, William’s son, came in charge and faced the challenge of running a distillery with a growing reputation for its unique flavor. By 1929 the brand would be known worldwide.
In the 1930s, a woman named Bessie Williamson got a summer job at the distillery. That job lasted 40 summers, and she became the manager, after Ian, in 1954.
The distillery changed several hands since the 1960s with D.Johnston & Company being the current owners and Beam Suntory being the parent company since 2014.
The distillery’s seven stills can lead to a capacity of approximately 3.6 million liters per year.
