The initial name of the site was “Dufftown-Glenlivet” distillery. Arthur Bell & Sons acquired the distillery in 1933 in order to provide malt for its own blends.

The company used the whisky produced in Dufftown distillery as a key ingredient for their blends, so a need for production increase occurred. During the next years an increase in the stills took place as in 1968 the stills were increased from two to four, in 1974 the number of stills became six, while in 1979 they were increased to eight.

In 1975 a second distillery was built next to Dufftown distillery, named Pittyvaich or as it was called “Dufftown 2”. This second distillery closed in 1993.

Guiness would be the new owners in 1985 and since their merger with Grand Metropolitan that formed Diageo in 1997. Diageo are the current owners.

In 2006, the distillery joined the Singleton family with single malt releases since then.
