The production began in 1900, right before the beginning of the decline in Scottish whisky production. The problems started right away, since the distillery was forced to close only 5 months after production began.

The distillery was sold twice during the next 6 years when JJ Blanche acquired the distillery.
The distillery stayed in Blanche’s ownership until 1930, when Scottish Malt Distillers bought the distillery under the license of White Horse.

The distillery rose in reputation and a need for increased production occurred, so the number of stills rose from two to six.

In 1992 the distillery closed again for three years, but this time in order to be refurbished.
The majority of the distillery’s production is used in blends, and single malt expressions are rare to be found. Only in 2001 a 12 year old expression was released as part of the flora & fauna range while in 2008 a 16 year old expression was released.
