Masataka Taketsuru was looking for a place where his second distillery would be built and focused on two things: He wanted the site to be suitable for whisky production but he also wanted different features that would lead to different whisky expressions than his first distillery, Yoichi.

In the northern part of Japan he found a glen where two rivers with clean water would meet. It is said that he tried the water from one river and got so excited that he immediately decided that this would be the location for his second distillery.

In order to provide himself with more variety in flavor not only the different terroir in Miyagikyo helped, but different distilling methods were used as well: Stills with different sizes and shapes as well as Coffey stills.

The Coffey stills were first placed in the Nishinomiya plant before being transferred to Miyagikyo distillery in 1999.
